Rabastens is one of the rare communes where archives dating back to the 13 th century have been preserved, thus making it possible to retrace the evolution of the vinyards over the centuries..

Throughout the Middle Ages, local life revolved around wine and wine growing. The soil was certainly favourable to the establishment of vineyards, but already in this period severe regulations concerning vines and wine upheld the high quality of the produce.

Today, wine and wine-growing are still the main economic activities of the town of Rabastens

The Cave de Rabastens was created in 1953 by a few wine-growers whose desire was to share their knowledge and their means. At the moment it regroups 1290 hectares of vineyards, 240 co-operative members, 22 employees and their families, produces 80,000 hl of AOC Gaillac, regional wine from the Cotes du Tarn and AOC Fronton Villaudric and sells 5 million bottles in France and for export.

Because of its and of the economic which it has generated around the wine, the Cave de Rabastens is an important element in the life ot the region and the most important activity in Rabastens.

Proud of their origins, the wine growers put all their energy into their enterprise, investing more and more in the quality of their product, in the up-keep of the parcels and in modern material for vinification, farming and conditionning the wine.

If the wines of Rabastens are renown today throughout France for their quality and their sympathetic typify,it is because the wine growers, passionate about their region and their work, knew how to go out and meet consummers all over France in order to explain and let taste the wines they had produced.

Since many years, they animate a tour which they have created and named, "Le vin au fil de l'eau", or "drifting with wine".With the bus tour one discovers the history of the region from the Middle Ages until today, through the vines, the dovecots and the river. It is a free trip which ends with a visit to the wine cellars and free wine tasting. News

The Cave, as an economic element, is a partener in the life to Rabastens, through its support of sportive, cultural and artistic manifestations. Its wine growers are active ambassadors on this side of, and beyond the frontiers of, the Tarn.
